Lipari Stone & Gardens
Our Story
Daniel Lipari
Proprietor
How we got started
Daniel grew up in the area, attended Ithaca High School ('97) and SUNY Fredonia ('03), but originally hails from Stuttgart, Germany. The Lipari family settled into Smith Valley, NY in 1980 on a 25 acre wooded hillside and a 150 year old farm house in need of total renovation. Today, nearly 40 years later, the home has changed significantly to become a beautiful example of the American Dream. But like any home, there is always another project on the horizon.
After graduating from college Daniel traveled and pursued his career outside of the Ithaca, NY region. But he never felt quite as much at home and part of a community as right here in the Ithaca area. Living in New York City, San Diego, or traveling extensively through Asia and Europe gave him an opportunity to experience many different cultures. But in the end, the Finger Lakes Region of New York is where Daniel decided to settle down. His passion for gardening and stone pointed him in the direction of building integrated landscapes for modern homes and gardens.
His professional background was originally in Public Relations, working for the publicist for Ringo Starr and Bob Geldof. Later, moving into academic administration, he worked at Cornell University, UC San Diego and the New School of Architecture & Design. But as for many people, the 'Great Recession' made it necessary for him to find a new career. His passion for gardening and stone pointed him in the direction of building integrated landscapes for modern homes and gardens.
When Daniel returned to Ithaca in 2009 he decided to create Lipari Stone and Garden, (then No Man Services). It had become apparent that the community needed a small business to provide high quality services, not just for large projects, but also for smaller projects that are too much for a homeowner to handle themselves.
In 2014, he joined the Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Company to contribute to the community, give something back, and to help those people most in need.About Daniel
Daniel brings his experience in event planning and office administration, combined with his passion for beautiful gardens, to his landscaping business:
- Daniel will show up as scheduled - always!
- Complete projects to the client's satisfaction in the time frame specified.
- Work with a client to navigate the realities of big projects and limited budgets.
- Guide clients to a fuller understanding of their projects so that they can know and understand their properties and options better. Advising a client on a better or easier approach to a problem is more important to him than "landing a job."
Landscaping and building beautiful stone work is not just a service Daniel offers to his clients, it is a personal passion. Whether it is harvesting field stones from old foundations, farmer's fields or the local gorges. A new natural stone wall or patio can look like it has been there for years or decades. Lipari Stone and Garden also sources many plants from the Lipari farm’s stock of more than 1,400 plant varieties to create beautiful, sustainable and low maintenance gardens and landscapes.
The Lipari Family Home
Over our house's 150 plus years of life it has been a home to several families and many generations. Until the Lipari family bought the home, it had mostly been a working farm. Each owner put their own special touches on it, some that worked, and some that did not work over the long run. The Liparis have made extensive improvements to the house to make it a modern multi family home with all the amenities. Extensive storm drainage systems, independent generator and solar panels have contributed to updating the home for our changing environment.
In the Liparis' almost 40 year residence we have perfected the art of low maintenance landscaping that enhances the beauty of the old farm house. The Lipari farm is home to over 1,400 varieties of perennials, shrubs and trees that flower from March through November. Some even provide winter interest such as ornamental grasses, conifers and perennials and shrubs. With interesting seed stalks, for example the maroon seed heads of some of the Sedums, or the seed sheath of Asclepias. In order to have four seasons of beauty, it is necessary to do selective fall clean-up that leaves enough interesting plant debris - often greatly enhanced by snow - to please the home owner through the winter months, but also to provide a source of food for birds who will feed on the seeds. However, this makes up an early spring clean-up very important. Removing the by now sad looking flower stalks and dried grass clumps right after the snow melts is vital if the small early spring bulbs, like snow drops, Scilla, Chinodoxia and the dwarf daffodils are going to make their mark. The garden designs are meant to grow and mature so that they can maintain themselves, with dense clumping perennials to eliminate the need for intensive weeding. The gardens are laid out so that there is no need for string trimming as the lines are created so that there are no tight corners the mower deck can't get too.
It's wonderful to have this mature garden to work in, learning and experimenting different styles and looks. Being able to work on a project where budget is not king allows for real creativity to blossom. As with any home, the work is never done and there is always another project on the horizon!
Over our house's 150 plus years of life it has been a home to several families and many generations.
